Medical Scientists Refute Falun Gong's Fallacies
Some renowned Chinese medical scientists on July 24 disclosed the fact that some people's health has been damaged due to refusal of treatment as a result of blind faith in Falun Gong.
They stressed that knowledge of medical science should be further spread among ordinary people to help them spurn fatuity and superstitious thinking, as well as escape tragedies caused by Falun Gong.
The Chinese media has recently reported an array of cases, in which Falun Gong practitioners refused to seek treatment from doctors, in accordance with the dictates of the sect. Many became more seriously ill or even died. Some committed suicide after suffering from mental disorder.
"I myself have witnessed a rocketing rate of mental illnesses among Falun Gong practitioners since 1996," Dr. Zhang Tongling, a psychiatrist at the No. 6 Hospital Attached to the Beijing Medical University, told a forum here today.
She quoted statistics from the psychiatric departments of two Beijing hospitals as showing that mentally-diseased Falun Gong followers now accounted for 42 percent of all mental patients, compared with only 10.1 percent in 1996.
"It is an indisputable fact that practicing Falun Gong can lead to many kinds of mental disorders, which however has never been admitted by Falun Gong advocators," said Cai Zhuoji, also a psychiatrist at the Beijing Anding Hospital.
Cardiologist Jiang Baoqi said that a high blood pressure patient, who turned to Falun Gong for treatment, refused to take drugs and finally died of a stroke.
"China has over 100 million sufferers from hypertension. How can they be cured if they rely on such fabrications? I am really worried about this," he said.
The experts shared the view that medical professionals should devote themselves not only to saving patients' lives through scientific means, but also to massive campaigns to spread scientific knowledge among ordinary people. (Xinhua)
