Following is a biographical sketch of Wu Jieping, who was just elected vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the Ninth National People's Congress (NPC):

Wu, male; born January, 1917; a native of Changzhou, Jiangsu Province; member of Jiu San (September 3) Society and Communist Party of China (CPC); graduated from Peking Union Medical College;professor.

Studied at Chicago University, U.S., 1947-1948; served asassociate professor and professor at Beijing Medical Institute,1948-1960; vice-president, president and professor of Beijing No.2 Medical Institute, 1960-1970.

Served as vice-president, president and honorary president of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, president of Capital Medical College, president and honorary president of China Union Medical University, chairman and honorary chairman of Chinese

Medical Association, vice-chairman and honorary chairman of China Association for Science and Technology, member of NPC Education,Science, Culture and Public Health Committee, vice-chairman and chairman of Central Committee of Jiu San Society, 1970-1993.

Serving as vice-chairman of NPC Standing Committee, chairman ofJiu San Society Central Committee, chairman of Western Returned Students' Association, academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, honorary president and professor of China Union Medical University and Beijing Medical University since 1993.
