Following is a biographical sketch of Peng Peiyun, who was elected vice-chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the Ninth National People's Congress (NPC):

Peng, female; born December, 1929; a native of Liuyang, Hunan Province; joined Communist Party of China (CPC) May, 1946;graduated from Qinghua University.

Served as secretary of general Party branch in Qinghua University, 1949-1950; deputy secretary of CPC Beijing University Committee, 1964-1966.

Served as vice-minister of Education, 1982-1985; vice-minister of State Education Commission, 1985-1988; secretary of CPC Committee of Chinese University of Science and Technology,1987-1988. Serving as minister in charge of State Family Planning Commission since 1988; State Councillor since 1993.

Elected member of CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection at 13th CPC National Congress; member of 14th and 15th CPC Central Committees
