Taiwan Warned on Cross-Straits Relations

A commentary released today by the Xinhua News Agency warns the Taiwan authorities against regarding relations between the two sides of the Taiwan Straits as a trifling matter.

The article listed some deceptions enunciated by Lee Teng-hui in recent days.

In one such deceptive statement, Lee claimed that he "opposes Taiwan independence," and said the "one China policy is my ultimate objective" and even corrected himself on his remarks on the theory of "two states" in the wake of strong pressure from people in both the mainland and Taiwan.

Meanwhile, he has raised hundreds of billions of Taiwan dollars to shore up its declining stock market, an outcome of his proclamation of the "two states" theory, and sought support for this theory from some US scholars.

It is Lee Teng-hui who denied the one China principle with his "two states" theory, sabotaging the basis of cross-Straits development and negotiations between the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) and Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF).

Under such circumstance, Lee was deceitful by saying time and again that he expects the visit of ARATS President Wang Daohan to Taiwan this autumn. He even made unfounded counter-charges by saying that if Wang calls off his visit to Taiwan, he should bear responsibility for sabotaging relations between the two sides.
This is the distorted logic of a rascal, the article said.

The Taiwan authorities should understand that the one China principle is the basis and premise for developing cross-Straits relations and realizing the unification of China. One must not be vague on this matter of principle, the article noted.

It is quite dangerous to the development of cross-Straits relations to treat this issue of vital interest to Taiwan compatriots as a trifling matter, the commentary concluded.
