Southeastern Chinese Economic Zone Reports Good Performance

XIAMEN, July 28 (Xinhua) -- The Xiamen Special Economic Zone ( SEZ) in east China's Fujian Province had a GDP of 19.12 billion yuan from January to June, up 15.9 percent on a year-on-year basis, and double the national average of 7.8 percent.

In August 1980, China made its southern Guangdong Province's Shenzhen, Zhuhai, and Shantou, and eastern Fujian's Xiamen into special economic zones with preferential policies and special administrative methods to attract more overseas investment. Hainan Province then followed suit in 1988 and is now the largest SEZ in the country.

In economic performance, Xiamen was 2.3 percentage greater than Shenzhen, which was in second place out of the five SEZs.

Xiamen had 25.69 billion yuan worth of industrial output in the first 6 months, up 28 percent from the same period last year, It was also high on the list of the country's 42 major cities in total industrial output value, marketing of industrial products, profits, reduced losses, working assets, and productivity.
