Earthquake Jolts West China Mountainous Area

Picture dated November 15 shows a big crack on top of Kunlun Mountain. An earthquake measuring 8.1 on the Richter Scale jolted an unpopulated area of the Kunlun Mountain on the border between Qingha province and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in west China at 17:26 Wednesday November 14, 2001. Several aftershocks had occured by 11:00 Thursday. Since the quake occured in unpopulated land with altitude of over 5,000 meters, so far no casualties have been reported.

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji has called on the country's national tax administration to redouble efforts to carry out the work, known as the Golden Tax Project and to use information technology to crack down on tax evasion during his inspection in the State Administration of Taxation on November 14.
