Xinhua Celebrates 70th Anniversary

Xinhua News Agency, China's state wire service, held a commemoration meeting in Beijing Wednesday to celebrate the 70th anniversary of its founding.

President Jiang Zemin, also general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), sent a congratulatory letter to Xinhua, hoping its staff would continue the good traditions and working style that have been formed through the years in order to build Xinhua into a more powerful and influential international wire service.

The other members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Li Peng, Zhu Rongji, Li Ruihuan, Hu Jintao, Wei Jianxing and Li Lanqing, also expressed their congratulations to Xinhua in various ways.

Ding Guangen, member of the Political Bureau and head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, addressed the commemoration on behalf of the CPC Central Committee.

Ding, also a member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, said that for the past seven decades, Xinhua has developed itself through hard work, nurtured many excellent journalists and earned a name not only throughout the country but also the world.

The good tradition of Xinhua that has been formed during its development over the past 70 years is valuable treasure for the Party's publicity cause, said Ding.

As the state news agency, Xinhua should be the eye and ear and the mouthpiece of the CPC and the people, Ding said, adding that it has widespread influence and has a major bearing on the overall work, Ding said.

He urged Xinhua workers to hold high the banner of Deng Xiaoping Theory, toe the line of the "Three Represent's" put forward by Jiang, strictly follow the instructions of the CPC Central Committee with Jiang at the core, stick to basic Party lines, correctly channel public opinion, and serve the people, socialism and overall work of the Party and State.

Xinhua should exert its advantages, perform its role fully and accurately convey the latest voice of the central authorities to the people as quickly as possible, Ding said.

Ding said that Xinhua should earnestly and widely popularize the basic lines and policies of the Party, report the achievements made by the people with their pioneering spirits, and also promptly and truthfully report the voice and wishes of the people.

Ding said that Xinhua should actively expand its coverage of the world news, which will give the Chinese people a better knowledge of the world, and help the outside world know more about China.

Meanwhile, Xinhua must improve its service to worldwide subscribers by restructuring and making innovations, Ding said.

The news agency was also urged by Ding to keep up with new technology in news collection and dissemination, expand its global market share and enhance its competitiveness.

Tian Congming, Xinhua president, reviewed the 70 year development of the news agency at the commemoration.

Tian said that Xinhua has established a relatively complete network of news collection, editing and dissemination as well as a technological support system and a worldwide news service system.

Xinhua is facing new opportunities and challenges at present, Tian said, stressing that the new generation of Xinhua workers should seize the opportunities in the new century, properly deal with new challenges and speed up its development.

Founded on November 7, 1931, in Ruijin, east China's Jiangxi Province, Xinhua has built up a news collection network which covers 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions, the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions, as well as more than 100 countries and regions worldwide.

At present, Xinhua releases 1.8 million words in news coverage in seven languages as well as 290 news photographs to over 13,000 domestic and overseas subscribers every day.
