US Embassy in Qatar Confirms Americans Wounded In Shooting

The US Embassy in Qatar has confirmed that several American servicemen were wounded in Wednesday's shooting incident, during which the Qatari gunman was killed.

Although U.S. officials did not give more details on the casualties, the Egyptian MENA news agency put the injured American servicemen at four, citing the BBC radio broadcast.

Meanwhile, the World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General Mike Moore told reporters the attack was a "sad" incident, but was not related to the upcoming WTO meeting.

Qatari Attorney General Brigadier Abuduallah al Mall also said the attack was an "individual, unorganized" act.

The shooting rampage happened just as the tiny Persian Gulf state was beefing up security for the fourth World Trade Organization (WTO) ministerial meeting, due to take place in Doha from November 9 to 13.

The official Qatari News Agency quoted an Interior Ministry official as saying that the man, identified as Abdullah Mubarak Tashal al-Hajiri, fired earlier in the day at the Udeid airbase being used by U.S. military aircraft.

He said the man was later shot dead by Qatari security guards around the airbase.

The official news agency, however, did not mention a motive for the attack.

The attack is expected to cast shadow over the country's capability to guarantee the safety for the WTO meeting.
