Verbruggen Appointed Chairman of IOC Coordination Commission

Hein Verbruggen has been appointed chairman of the Coordination Commission for the 2008 summer Olympic Games in China, International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge said in Lausanne, Switzerland on Tuesday.

The Dutchman, chairman of the IOC Evaluation Commission for the 2008 Games which included the only members of the IOC able to visit the bidding cities, has also been president of cycling's world governing body UCI since 1991.

Rogge said in an IOC statement: "Hein Verbruggen has all the qualities needed to chair the Coordination Commission.

"His experience as chairman of the Evaluation Commission and his knowledge of the Olympic movement make him the ideal person to accompany Beijing in its preparations for the Olympic Games in 2008."
