He said that China welcomes the first committee of the United Nations General Assembly, which is in charge of disarmament and international security, to adopt a resolution calling for joined efforts to strengthen and preserve the Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) Treaty.Zhu made the comments that China devotes much attention to the first United Nations General Assembly convened in the new millennium, and is ready to work together with all sides to make the UN play an greater role, fulfill the goals set by the Millennium Summit and boost the world peace and development. The approval of the resolution demonstrated that the whole world hopes to further maintain the global strategic stability. As one of the co-sponsors of the resolution, China fully appreciated other countries' support. China hoped that countries concerned could listen carefully to the advice from international counterparts and take careful steps in anti-ballistic missile issues. China is always ready to join hands with its international counterparts for the issues concerned, Zhu said. Zhu revealed that Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan, heading a delegation, will attend the General Assembly and he will make a speech in the general debate of the General Assembly. Tang will also attend the U.N. Security Council Counter-Terrorism Ministerial Meeting and the Ministerial Meeting of "6+2" Group on Afghanistan, and meet with U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, President of the 56th General Assembly session Han Seung-soo, as well as leaders and foreign ministers from other countries, Zhu added. The First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, which is in charge of disarmament and international security, adopted a resolution on November 3. The resolution, proposed by Russia, China and Belarus, calls for united efforts to strengthen the limitation of the Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) Treaty and to help facilitate global arms reduction. The ABM Treaty, signed by the U.S. and the Soviet Union in 1972, has played a cornerstone role in maintaining world strategic stability and in promoting nuclear disarmament of the U.S. and the Soviet Union. Yet, the U.S. has devoted great resources to developing the national anti-missile system since last year, despite Russia's rejection of its proposal to revise the ABM Treaty. The pass of the resolution demonstrated the international community's opposition against the U.S. efforts to develop and deploy the NMD. |
