Mubarak Meets With British Defense Secretary on Anti-terror Issues

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak met with British Defense Secretary Geoff Hoon on Tuesday and discussed with him issues regarding terrorism and anti-terror campaign.

Details of the meeting were not immediately available. But Egyptian officials said that Hoon's two-day visit was aimed at "continuing consultations with the Egyptian leadership on all aspects of fighting terrorism and bilateral military cooperation."

Egypt has rejected a British proposal to extradite some Egyptian terrorists in the kingdom in return for Cairo's participation in the U.S.-led war against terrorism.

The proposal, put forward by British Prime Minister Tony Blair during his visit to Egypt last month, was rejected by Mubarak.

Mubarak has stressed that the Egyptian armed forces is to defend the country rather than intervene in outside affairs. He has also warned of danger if Egypt takes part in any such coalition without clear-cut objectives.

The U.S. has been pounding the Afghan ruling Taliban militia since October 7 for harboring Osama bin Laden, a Saudi-born multimillionaire suspected of masterminding the September 11 terror attacks in New York and Washington leaving thousands of people dead.
