Iran Opposes Foreign Intervention in Afghanistan: FM

Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi on Tuesday voiced opposition to any foreign intervention in Afghanistan, saying that it would make the problem even more serious.

Kharazi, who is in Ankara for an official visit to Turkey, made the remarks at a joint news conference with his Turkish counterpart Ismail Cem after a meeting.

Asked to comment on Turkey's decision to send a special force unit to Afghanistan, Kharazi said that the "Afghans do not like others to intervene in their affairs."

Cem told the news conference that he respects Kharazi's remarks, "yet there can be different interpretations on certain issues."

"Turkish soldiers are not a force that will attack Afghanistan, on the contrary, they will contribute to the Afghan people's efforts to save themselves from terrorism," he said.

Last Thursday, Turkey, NATO's only Muslim member state, announced that it would send 90 soldiers of the special force to Afghanistan to help train the opposition Northern Alliance battling the ruling Taliban militia.

The U.S. has been pounding the Taliban since October 7 for harboring Osama bin Laden, a Saudi-born multi-millionaire suspected of masterminding the September 11 terror attacks in New York and Washington.
