Chinese Premier Meets Vietnamese PMChinese Premier Zhu Rongji made the remarks Tuesday in a meeting with Vietnamese Prime Minister Phan Van Khai, who is in Bandar seri Begawan attending ASEAN meetings. Zhu said that maintaining long-term peace and stability on the border between China and Vietnam is the common aspiration of the two peoples, and the two sides should give full consideration to the long-term stability of Beibu Bay and deal with relevant issues in the spirit of mutual understanding. Zhu said that China is looking forward to Vietnamese General-Secretary Nong Duc Manh's upcoming visit, voicing his belief that the visit will promote all-round relations of cooperation between China and Vietnam. Zhu said that Sino-Vietnamese trade cooperation has been fruitful. The bilateral trade volumes, which reached 2.4 billion U.S. dollars last year, have maintained growth this year. And the cooperative projects between the two countries have progressing smoothly. He said that China and Vietnam are complimentary in economy, with a great potential for cooperation. The Chinese government will support its large enterprises in investing in Vietnam. Phan Van Khai said that this year marks the 10th anniversary of the normalization of Vietnam-China ties, and the bilateral cooperation in trade had developed rapidly in the past ten years. The two countries still have more room for further cooperation. He said that the land boundary treaty and Beibu Bay demarcation agreement are of significance. Vietnam is ready to work with China to promote the follow-up negotiations on the fishery agreement to enable the Beibu Bay demarcation agreement to be implemented as soon as possible. He also congratulated China on its successful hosting of the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting and its impending entry to the World Trade Organization. He expressed satisfaction for just-concluded ASEAN plus one meeting, hoping that China and ASEAN take further steps to promote bilateral ties.
