Senior Chinese Military Leader Meets Guests from New Zealand

Zhang Wannian, vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission of China, met Tuesday with guests from New Zealand, headed by the Defense Minister Mark Burton.

Zhang said that Burton is the first visiting Defense Minister from New Zealand in the new century. The visit will further promote the mutual understanding and trust as well as boost the relations between two nations and the two armed forces.

Zhang said that since the establishment of the Sino-New Zealand diplomatic relations in 1972, there have been more frequent visits among high-level officials and the friendly cooperation has been enhanced day by day.

Zhang said that Chinese government valued the friendly cooperation with New Zealand.

"We are satisfied with the present situation of the two armed forces and willing to promote a more deepened and comprehensive military relationship with the New Zealand friends," he said.

Burton said that New Zealand has long valued the friendly relations with China. He spoke highly of for China's remarkable development achievements in recent years.
