Multipolarity Plays Key Role in World Peace: Chinese Vice President

"Multipolarity constitutes an important base for world peace and the democratization of international relations is an "essential guarantee" for that peace", said Chinese Vice President Hu Jintao on Monday during his five-nation tour in Paris.

Hu addressed an audience of more than 200 experts and scholars at the French International Relations Institute that China attaches great importance to the democratization of international relations in a multipolar world and hopes all nations will benefit on an equal base from economic globalization in the 21st century.

"The multi-polarity composes an important base for achieving a durable peace on this planet," he said. Such multi-polarity is conducive to building a new, just and reasonable eco-political order, setting up a relatively-stable international political framework and promoting exchanges and cooperation, he added.

It is gradually becoming a consensus shared by the international community that world affairs, which should not be monopolized by a superpower, necessitate the participation of all nations, the vice president said.

"The democratization of international relations constitutes an essential guarantee for world peace. All countries, big or small, strong or weak, rich or poor, are equal members of the international community," he added.

"Issues concerning global and regional peace should be resolved through consultations based on the U.N. Charter and universal norms," he said.

The vice president stressed that in the new century, China will keep intensifying its exchanges and cooperation with all other countries based on the principles of equality and mutual respect to deepen understanding, expand consensus and learn from each other so as to achieve progress together.

On economic globalization, Hu said this inevitable trend should be conducive to the common prosperity of all nations.

"China will contribute to the equal participation of all countries in the decision-making process of global economic instruments and norms to establish a rational international financial and trade system, reduce the risks of developing countries and contain the worsening wealth gap," he said.

Hu called on the world community to adopt a new concept of international security based on mutual trust, reciprocal benefit, equality and cooperation to create an international environment of durable peace, stability and security.

He promised that China will put the new concept into action. "China will maintain good relations and cooperation with all other nations on the basis of the five principles of peaceful co-existence."

The vice president reaffirmed that China firmly opposes and condemns all forms of international terrorism and upheld that the international community should jointly fight against terrorism by intensifying dialogue and cooperation.

"In the meantime, China considers the fight should be based on the U.N. Charter and universal norms. The U.N. Security Council should play a key role in this field, and all actions should be conducive to long-term interests of world peace and development," he said.

"We firmly oppose hegemony and power politics. The development of China constitutes no threat to other countries. On the contrary, it does good to world peace and prosperity," said the Chinese vice president.

China is willing to work together with all other peoples to bring the world into a new century of peace, stability, prosperity and growth, he concluded.

On Sino-European relations, the vice president said China and Europe should develop long-term and comprehensive cooperation.

France is the third leg of Hu's five-nation tour, he will continue to visit Spain and Germany. Hu arrived in Bordeaux, southern France last Thursday after visits to Russia and Britain and toured France's second largest city, Lyon last Friday. He will stay in Paris till this Tuesday.
