Joint International Efforts Needed to Solve Global Issues: Li Peng

Top Legislator Meets with Cuban counterpart Ricardo Alarcon
Visiting Chinese top legislator Li Peng Sunday called for international solidarity and cooperation in solving global issues such as terrorism and separatism.

At a meeting with his Cuban counterpart Ricardo Alarcon de Quesada in Havana, Li said since the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States, the world situation has become even more complicated, coupled with an increase of unstable factors.

The terrorist attacks manifested again that the world is still far from tranquillity and the human being's common cause of peace and development is faced with a lot of threats and challenges, he said.

Particularly, terrorism, separatism and extremism have posed grave threats to world peace and development, he added.

A solution of these global problems requires solidarity and cooperation among countries and the effective role of the United Nations and its Security Council, Li said, adding that the incidental and fundamental aspects behind the global problems must be treated.

China is willing to keep close contacts with Cuba on contemporary international and regional issues and coordinate their stance timely, said Li, who is on the second day of his four-day visit to Cuba.

On China's relationship with Latin America, Li said, China would spare no efforts to maintain a long-term, stable and comprehensive co-operative relationship with all Latin American nations on the basis of equality and mutual benefits in the new century.

China attaches great importance to its relations with Latin American countries, and efforts by both sides for several decades have forged a solid basis for the Sino-Latin American ties.

Expressing satisfaction with the development of the Cuban-Chinese relations, Alarcon thanked China for support for Cuba, an island country under U.S. blockade and pressure. He also spoke highly of the two countries' coordination and support given to each other in handling international affairs.

Cuba firmly supports China in safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity, he said. Any rejection of one-China policy and any denial of the representation of the government of the People's Republic of China as China's sole legitimate government will all end up in failure, he added.

After their talks, Li and Alarcon attended the ceremony of signing an agreement of economic cooperation and the donation of office equipment by China's National People's Congress to the National Assembly of People's Power.
