Removal of Corrupt Officials Boosts Development in NE China

Shenyang, capital of northeast China's Liaoning Province has seen positive changes in social stability and economic development, thanks to the recent sacking of the city's mayor and deputy mayor on corruption charges.

Following the dismissal of Mayor Mu Suixin and Deputy Mayor Ma Xiangdong, the new generation of leaders in Shenyang have made sustained efforts to fight corruption, straighten out administrative procedures, intensify reforms and boost economic development, said a source from the municipal government.

Figures provided by the local statistical and trade authorities show that Liaoning reported an annual nine-percent rise in gross domestic product and a 34-percent rise in financial revenue during the first nine months of this year.

The province's actual use of overseas investment totaled 1.391 billion U.S. dollars during the January-July period, up 20.1 percent year-on-year. Foreign direct investment hit 1.317 billion U.S. dollars, up 33.4 percent over the corresponding period of last year.

Shenyang, an old industrial base, is marching towards an international metropolis, with the construction of the Hunnan New Area, whose first-phase involves a total investment of 22 billion yuan (about 2.6 billion U.S. dollars), and a number of other infrastructure construction projects.

Through intensified reforms, state-owned enterprises in Shenyang have improved efficiency and provided pensions and unemployment insurance for all staff.

Having witnessed the rapid economic growth and good public order, local leaders and the public are more confident in the Party and the government, said Shenyang's Mayor Chen Zhenggao, who took office at the end of last year.

Mu Suixin and Ma Xiangdong were sentenced to death on October 10 this year for embezzlement and taking large amount of bribes. Prior to that, the two had been expelled from the Communist Party of China (CPC) and dismissed from government employment.

Fourteen other officials who were implicated in the corruption case of Mu and Ma also received punishment.
