Chinese Premier Invited ROK Enterprises to Increase Investment in ChinaChinese Premier Zhu Rongji held talks Monday in Bandar seri Begawan with President Kim Dae-jung of the Republic of Korea (ROK) on bilateral ties and the situation on the Korean Peninsula.Both Zhu and Kim are here to attend the ASEAN plus Three (China, Japan and ROK) during the two-day ASEAN summit which began here earlier Monday. On the bilateral relations between China and ROK, Zhu said Chinese President Jiang Zemin and Kim Dae-jung declared that the two countries established cooperative partnership ties during the latter's visit to China in 1998, and both sides agreed to push such relationship to a new phase of full-fledged development during his visit to ROK last year. Zhu Rongji said that China will use the 10th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries as an opportunity to promote the bilateral relations to a new high. Satisfied with the development in the bilateral relations, the Chinese premier said China and ROK are important economic and trade partners with the trade volume increasing steadily. Zhu said that at a time of world economic downturn, the two sides should work together to keep the momentum of continuos development in bilateral economic and trade relations. China is willing to further cooperation with ROK in such areas as mobile telecommunications, finance and insurance, he added. The Chinese premier invited ROK enterprises to increase investment in China and increase imports of agricultural products from China. On the occasion, Kim Dae-jung said that there have been many good news for China this year including the successful holding of informal APEC leaders meeting, and joining the Word Trade Organization (WTO) soon. Kim said after China joins the WTO, the enormous Chinese market will provide a good chance for ROK, and ROK will make use of this opportunity to further strengthen its economic and trade cooperation and exchanges with China to create a win-win situation. On the situation on the Korean Peninsula, Kim briefed Zhu on the latest developments in the relations between the two sides of the peninsula and thanked China for its support in promoting peace and stability on the peninsula. Zhu said the south and north sides of the peninsula are important players in solving the problem of the peninsula, and China, as a close neighbor, strongly supports the two sides to improve their relations and realize reconciliation to finally achieve the goal of independent and peaceful unification.
