Taliban Retake Part of Afghan District

The Taliban retook part of a key northern Afghanistan district early Sunday after almost 12 hours of fierce fighting with the Afghan Northern Alliance (ANA), according to reports reaching Islamabad from Kabul, capital of Afghanistan.

The reports quoted Qari Qudratullah, a spokesman for the Northern Alliance commander Atta Mohammad as saying that the Taliban had taken back the eastern part of Aq-Kupruk district, 70 kilometers south of the northern capital of Mazar-i-Sharif.

He said the Taliban had launched fierce attacks from 2:00 pm on Saturday until 3:00 am Sunday (22:30 GMT Saturday).

An anti-Taliban group said earlier it had taken Aq-Kupruk district at midnight Saturday after 800 Taliban fighters changed sides.
