Singapore Government to Carry Out Three Urgent Task

Leaders of the Singapore People's Action Party emerged together at a press conference after the announcement of General elections results early Sunday morning to show the team's determination to carry out three urgent tasks for the island country and its people following the victory in the general election.

Speaking at the press conference held after the results of the general elections were announced, Singapore Prime Minister and PAP's Secretary General Goh Chok Tong said that his party has got the strong mandate from the people to overcome the current deep recession.

Noting that Singapore is in the midst of a deep recession and the short-term prospects remain bleak, the prime minister said that the mandate calls the government to take necessary measures to first try and ride out this recession and help Singaporeans overcome current difficulties.

He promised that his government will do its best to save jobs, to help retrenched workers get re-employed, to bring the costs down in order to save jobs and to attract more investments to create more jobs.

Singapore Deputy Prime Minister and PAP's Chairman Tony Tan also said that the urgent tasks facing the government are to ensure that more jobs be created for Singaporeans and more retrenchments be prevented.

Goh underscored that the most important task for him is to make a new team for the new leadership which will take over by 2007 and look after Singapore from 2007 onward.

He reaffirmed that there must be a new prime minister by 2007 and he will not step down when there is a deep recession in Singapore.

On the third task, the prime minister said that his government will get down to work immediately for restructuring the economy and right away to form an economic committee to look at the mid-term restructuring of the economy and explore ways to soften the blow of the current recession.

Tony Tan underlined that Singapore has to make fundamental changes to the economic model that has given Singapore extraordinary growth in the last 30 years.

In his speech, Goh stressed that all Singaporeans are in a same boat and the government has the responsibility to look after all of them.

The ruling PAP achieved a big win in the general election on Saturday, sweeping 82 seats out of a total of 84 and enjoying 10 points rise in shares of votes compared to the 65 percent share of votes the PAP received in the 1997 general election.

Goh and his team members expressed their satisfaction with the results of the election and Goh also revealed that within seven to 10 days he will form a new cabinet which will be sworn in on November 23.

The prime minister will fly to Brunei later Sunday to attend the ASEAN summit and the "10 + 3 " leaders' meeting.
