U.N. to Hold Week-long Debate on Anti-terror TreatiesA special treaty event focusing on U.N. conventions regarding terrorism will take place here from November 10 to 16 at U.N. headquarters in New York, a U.N. statement said Friday.During the week-long event, special arrangements will be made for heads of State and government to sign, ratify or accede to the conventions deposited with the Secretary-General, it said. In a letter to heads of State and government earlier this week,U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan urged States to reaffirm their abhorrence of terrorism by becoming party to the international conventions that establish a legal framework for dealing with the scourge, thereby contributing to the advancement of the international rule of law. Most recently, the General Assembly and the Security Council have expressed in the clearest of terms their revulsion at terrorist acts which essentially target innocent men, women and children. |
