Petrol Leak through Sewer Causes Explosions on Streets of Anhui

Petrol leaking from a gas station into an underground sewer has been found to be the cause of a series of explosions that occurred on the streets of Chuzhou City in east China's Anhui Province on October 30.

Four people were injured, and roads and buildings along West Phoenix Street and Fengle Street were damaged during the explosions which lasted five hours.

Witnesses said flames through some cellar wells on the streets ran as high as some 10 meters.

Soon after the explosions first occurred at around 6:00 p.m., firemen and police arrived at the spot to put out fires and evacuate residents.

Fire control experts collected samples from the sewer, from which they discovered the cause of the accident.

The gas station is owned by Jinda Company, a private firm that owns one oil storage and three gas stations.

Experts have called for tightened safety administration and fire precautions imposed on private gas station operators like Jinda. There are more than 200 such enterprises in the province.
