Chinese Premier, German Chancellor Visit Maglev Construction Site in Shanghai

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji and visiting German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder attended a ceremony Friday in Shanghai for the installation of the first guideway girder of the Shanghai Maglev Transrapid Project.

Zhu and Schroeder unveiled the first guideway girder ready for shipment and visited the workshop for making the beams used on the rail track.

It is learned that the project, started on March 1 of this year, is progressing steadily with efforts from both Chinese and German sides.

So far, the bases for the 30-km major line have been finished, construction of support facilities including stations, maintenance center and transformers has started, and over 200 guideway girders have been produced.

Today's ceremony marked an important step in the project, which is scheduled to go into operation at the beginning of 2003.

Zhu and Schroeder also attended a foundation-laying ceremony for Bayer's new integrated polymer production base here. That project, with a total investment of 3.1 billion U.S. dollars, is expected to go into production in 2008.

Schroeder Visits German Businesses in Shanghai

Visiting German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder attended a ceremony marking the start of production of the Shanghai Krupp Stainless Co., Ltd. and visited a shopping center of Germany-based OBI Heimwerkermaerket AG Friday in Shanghai.

Schroeder and Shanghai Mayor Xu Kuangdi started the cold-rolling mill of the Krupp's first-phase project, which has six production lines costing total investment of about 295 million U.S. dollars. It will annually produce 72,000 tons of stainless steel sheet roll.

German ThyssenKrupp and Shanghai Baogang Group Company signed the contract in December 1997 for the stainless steel project, China's biggest joint venture in the iron and steel industry so far, with a total investment was 1.43 billion U.S. dollars. The company, which went into construction in April 1998, will produce 440,000 tons of stainless steel sheet roll every year.

The OBI, Germany's biggest chain retailer dealing with building materials, home decoration, hardware, tools and gardening products, has opened four supermarkets in east China's coastal cities including Shanghai.
