US Bombs Unlikely to Overthrow Taliban, Says Northern Alliance Official

A senior military officer of Afghanistan's opposition Northern Alliance commented Friday that 20 days of US bombing have not been effective in destroying Taliban forces.

General Faizmuhamadhon, deputy chief of staff of Northern Alliance's Dashtikala city management bureau, told Xinhua in an exclusive interview that geographic complexity in Afghanistan is a great constraint for US troops and it would be hard for them to unilaterally wage a ground war.

The general also said the Northern Alliance would be able to smash Taliban forces if the United States assists it.

He said Taliban forces remain strong and are well equipped. US air strikes can inflict damage on the Taliban but are not a solution to the problem. The effective solution is a ground war, he added.
