Speaking at a news conference, Li said that both China and Nigeria as developing countries have much in common, such as a large population, huge market potential and rapid growth of economy, all of which provide conditions for the two sides to strengthen economic and trade cooperation. He said: "Nigeria is one of China's important economic and trade cooperation partners. In recent years, propelled by the mutual visit of senior officials and the exchanges of entrepreneurs, substantial progress has been made in bilateral trade, investment and technical cooperation. Chinese enterprises are showing great interest in trade and investment in Nigeria." In late August this year, Li said, Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo visited China and called on Chinese businessmen to invest in Nigeria, saying that the visit has injected strong new impetus into bilateral economic and trade cooperation. According to the director, a wide range of products will be on display, covering motorcycles and parts, auto parts, bicycle parts, tires, agriculture machines, weaving machines, cookware, air conditioners, color TVs, refrigerators, small household electric appliances, electronics, diesel engines and power generators. As the most populous country in Africa with about 120 million people, Nigeria has broad market potential and attracted more and more Chinese firms and individuals to do business with their Nigerian counterparts and seek for investment opportunities. According to the Economic and Commercial Office of the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, the volume of bilateral trade between China and Nigeria amounted to 850 million U.S. dollars in 2000. While in the first half of 2001, it boosted to more than 530 million dollars.
