Top Legislator: China Supports Political Multi-Polarity, Economic GlobalizationChinese top legislator Li Peng said Thursday in Algiers that China supports political multi-polarity and economic globalization, which has become an objective trend of the contemporary world.Political multi-polarity, Li said, will serve as an important guarantee for world peace and development. Li, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), made the remarks at a meeting with President of the Algerian National People's Assembly Abdul Qadir Bin Saleh. He noted that developing countries are now facing a severe challenge in the process of economic globalization, in which the gap between developing countries and developed ones has been widened. Although economic globalization has become necessary in the context of the rapid development of economy and science and technology, a key point is how to read the trend in a correct way and understand well the gains and losses it brings about, Li said. On China and Algeria's role on the world arena, Li stressed that the two countries have been cooperating with and supporting each other in the unremitting endeavor for establishing a new international political and economic order, upholding justice and safeguarding the rights of developing countries. Therefore, Li continued, China and Algeria as key members of the developing world should strengthen exchange, consultation and solidarity between them. Li and Saleh agreed that close cooperation between the two countries' parliaments will be conducive to the economic development of their respective countries. Sharing Li's views on world problems, Saleh said the two countries have reached consensus on many issues including human rights and the struggle against terrorism. He also spoke highly of China's contribution to the reduction of debt burden of Africa. During their talks, the two sides declared the establishment of two friendly parliamentarian groups in an effort to strengthen exchange and cooperation between the two parliaments. Li is on the second day of his three-day stay in Algeria, the first leg of his five-nation visit which will also bring him to Cuba, Argentina, Uruguay and Tunis. Sino-Algerian Economic Cooperation PromisingLi Peng said Thursday that there are great potentials for trade and economic cooperation between China and Algeria, singling out energy and telecommunication as favorable areas in this respect. At a meeting with Algerian Prime Minister Ali Benflis, Li noted the Sino-Algerian relations have witnessed great progress ever since the two countries established diplomatic relations four decades ago, with fruitful cooperation seen in various fields. He attributed the achievements to the fact that the bilateral cooperation has all along been based upon the principle of equality and mutual benefit with no political conditions attached. China is willing to increase the exchange of experience with Algeria on issues like economic reforms and membership application with the World Trade Organization (WTO). For his part, Benflis pointed out that high-level exchanges have helped widen the scope of bilateral cooperation. He told Li that Algeria is interested in China's experience in economic construction, saying China's Hi-tech companies are welcome in Algeria.
