Public Awareness of Intellectual Property Rights Rises in HK, Survey

Hong Kong people's level of awareness of intellectual property rights is continuing to rise, showed the third annual survey released by the Intellectual Property Department at a press conference Thursday.

The survey on Public Awareness of Protecting Intellectual Property Rights shows that 74.3 percent of the respondents know that Hong Kong has implemented laws to protect intellectual property right and that 54.7 percent of the respondents perceive that the main purpose of protecting intellectual property rights is protecting invention and creation.

It also shows that more respondents than before think that people stop buying or using pirated or counterfeit goods because of fear of violation of intellectual property laws.

"These findings illustrate that people now appreciate the concept that if they fail to respect other people's inventions and creations, they will be held responsible for their actions," said Director of Intellectual Property Stephen Selby at the press conference.

The survey also shows that the majority of the community think lowering prices of original and licensed products will help reduce intellectual property right infringement.
