Terrorism Seriously Threats International Peace and Security: Jiang

Chinese President Meets German Chancellor
Chinese President Jiang Zemin enjoyed a friendly conversation Thursday in Beijing with visiting GermanChancellor Gerhard Schroeder, even quoting Goethe, who said that Chinese people think, feel and act in many ways similar to Germans.

Jiang said great achievements have been made in the past few years in Sino-German cooperation in various fields, a fact which delights him.

He said the Chinese people cherish friendship towards the German people.

China has always supported Germany's unification and thanks all German governments' adherence to the "one-China" policy, Jiang said.

He stressed that the mutual trust between China and Germany has been the firm basis for strengthening and expanding bilateral friendship and cooperation.

He said the international situation is witnessing new and profound changes, and the September 11 attacks in the United States have shown that the world is not peaceful, so it is extremely necessary to strengthen international cooperation.

Talking about the Euro, which will go into circulation at the start of next year, Jiang said it is of tremendous political significance. China attaches great importance to furthering its overall cooperative relations with the European Union (EU), he added.

Jiang also briefed Schroeder, who arrived here Wednesday on a three-day official visit as guest of Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji, on the APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) meetings in Shanghai, calling the meetings successful.

He said participants agreed that there are many problems facing the current world economy. However, they are optimistic about the future. Anti-terrorism also was discussed and a statement was issued.

Attendants agreed that terrorism, no matter when, by whom, where, and in what form, is a grave threat to world peace and security, Jiang said.

They also agreed that every country should take the same position on condemning and fighting terrorism resolutely, while the United Nations (UN) Charter and other international laws should be followed and the UN and its Security Council should be given full play in the matter.

Speaking highly of China's successful hosting of the APEC meetings, Schroeder said Germany attaches importance to its cooperation with China in various aspects.

The Euro's circulation next year will further promote the EU's integration, and it will bring about new opportunities for China to strengthen its relations with Europe, Schroeder said.

He agreed with China's position on anti-terrorism.

He said any person who carries out terrorist activities should be punished, and terrorist activities should be fully cracked down.

The German side also holds that the UN should play a bigger role in countering terrorism and the arrangement of the future government in Afghanistan.

German Chancellor Stresses Partnership with China

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said Thursday in Beijing that Germany and China should develop a long-standing partnership on the basis of mutual trust and common interests.

Schroeder, who arrived here Wednesday on a three-day official visit, delivered a speech Thursday at Beijing University highlighting the building of the Germany-China partnership in an ever-changing world.

Schroeder said that in a world of constant changes, such a partnership is of great importance to both countries. At present, the two have established close and reliable relations of mutual confidence in the spheres of politics, economics, technology and culture, and the two countries have also strengthened their cooperation in the sphere of security, he said.

China, the country with the largest population in the world, and as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, and an upcoming economic power, should play greater role at the international and regional levels, he said.

The chancellor said the new ways of production and the globalized market have intensified the uncertainties of the world, and a globalized world should give equal chances to all.

He also said problems facing all mankind, such as regional conflicts, terrorism, environmental protection and poverty reduction, should be dealt with within the framework of the United Nations.

He said that when adjusting the current international politicalrelations, the interests of every nation should be considered.

After the speech, Schroeder answered questions from the audience.
