Sub-region Africa Faces Six Challenges: Report

The second Regional Human Development Report of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), which was released on Wednesday in Gaborone, capital of Botswana, identified six key challenges facing the sub-region Africa.

These are economic development, peace and security, migration, refugees and displaced populations, HIV/AIDS, mobilization of national for human development and mechanisms for promoting practical integration, according to the Pan-African News Agency.

The report suggested diversification of national economies in order to avoid excessive dependence on non-renewable resources.

The Southern African Regional Institute for Policy Studies, which is part of the Southern African Political Economy Series Trust, compiled the 304-page report.

The report, commissioned by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), highlighted the opportunities and enormous potential for promoting human development through deeper integration in the SADC region.

Launching the report in Gaborone, Botswana Finance Minister Baledzi Gaolathe said that without developing human resources, the objectives of economic diversification, employment creation and poverty alleviation can not be realized in the region.

The report will be presented to a high-level seminar to be organized by SADC and UNDP in Swaziland for discussion next month. SADC's first human development report was published in 1998 entitled "Governance and Human Development in Southern Africa".
