China to Host the Best Olympics: Beijing Vice-mayor

China will take its responsibility to host the best Olympic Games in the history of the world, said Liu Jingmin, vice-mayor of Beijing, at the East Asian Economic Summit 2001 Wednesday.

Liu said: "We have seven years to ensure that our country and our city are ready to host the best Olympic Games in the history of the world. We take this responsibility seriously."

It is an opportunity to promote development and to improve social programs and it also is a challenge for a country that has spent the last two decades opening up and reforming its society, the vice-mayor said.

Liu quoted some experts' prediction that the Games would raise the GDP by 0.3 to 0.4 percent for all of China and 2 to 4 percent in Beijing alone in the next seven years.

The games will greatly boost China's macro economy, especially in three industries, namely, the environmental protection industry, the sports industry and the information industry, he said.

Liu announced about 60 billion RMB yuan would be invested in the next seven years to the betterment of the environment and 30 billion yuan will be injected into information infrastructures in Beijing.

He also pointed out that the sports will represent a 30 billion yuan industry within China by the year 2010.

Liu promised at the summit organized by the World Economic Forum that international standards would be adopted in Beijing's host of the Games. Measures had been and will continue be taken to ensure no corruption cases would happen, he said.
