Beijing Decides to Set Up 2008 Olympic Organizing Committee

Beijing Mayor Liu Qi said at the recent 39th executive meeting of the municipal government that two jobs for 2008 Olympic Games will be completed in the fourth quarter. First is the formulation of the "Action Program for the Olympics", which is the first step in the preparatory work; second is the formation of an organizing committee for the Olympic Games. Following the related regulations of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and complying with the requirement of the preparatory work, the formation of the 2008 Olympic Organizing Committee must be completed by December 13.

Liu Qi called on departments and work units undertaking overall strategic planning and nine special plans to liberate their minds, to be clear-headed, to draw upon collective wisdom and adopt all useful opinions, to engage in bold innovations and work out a plan of the world's top level. Leaders and governments at all levels as well as departments concerned must give all-out support to the founding work of the organizing committee, so long as it is needed in the preparatory work, they should guarantee that outstanding talents are transferred to the Organizing Committee. Regarding the selection of personnel, Liu Qi stressed the need to do away with the original employment system, and break the barriers of region and country and remove the restrictions of various other factors, as well as the need to fully tap the potential of foreign and domestic human resources, and do our level best to bring in outstanding people from various quarters and get them involved in the organizational work for the Olympic Games.
