Extension of Liberia Sanctions Recommended at UN

The UN Security Council on Tuesday received a report by an independent five-member panel dealing with Liberia sanctions, in which it recommended that the arms embargo and rough diamond sanctions be extended.

It further called for a ban on all round log exports from Liberia, starting from July 2002.

The panel chaired by Martin Chungong Ayafor of Cameroon, said that given progress by Liberia in addressing irregularities among its registered aircraft, the Security Council may consider lifting its order to ground Liberian aircraft.

The panel however found that a steady flow of new weapons has continued to enter into Liberia in violation of U.N. sanctions.

The Security Council in May 2000 imposed sanctions on Liberia, including travel restrictions on its leaders, a diamond export ban and an arms embargo, for its alleged involvement in arms-for-diamonds business with the rebel forces in Sierra Leone during the decade-long civil war.
