Musharraf, UN Envoy Discuss Peace Process in Afghanistan

Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf and United Nations Secretary General's Special Envoy on Afghanistan Lakhdar Brahimi on Tuesday exchanged views on the situation as well as the role of the UN in Afghan peace process and reconstruction of Afghanistan.

The Pakistani president stressed the importance of political process to be set in motion side by side with the military operations to be followed by reconstruction and rehabilitation process in Afghanistan.

Musharraf emphasized that the unity, territorial integrity, stability and peace in Afghanistan should be broad based and must take into account the multi-ethnic demographic composition of Afghanistan.

He also emphasized the need to plan a major rehabilitation effort for Afghanistan as fast as possible, to bring normalcy in the country.

Lakhdar Brahimi expressed his appreciation for Pakistan's support to the UN peace process. He agreed that there was need to accelerate the political process as well as the preparation of a comprehensive program for the reconstruction of Afghanistan.
