China Signs International Convention for Suppression of Terrorist Bombings

October 27 saw the decision made at the 24th session of the Standing Committee of the Ninth National People's Congress for China to formally join the International Convention for the Suppression of Terrorist Bombings.

The NPC Standing Committee announces at the same time that China reserves the rights on the Section 20, Article 1 of the said convention and not to be legally bound by it.

The convention is the first international legal document on combating terrorist bombing in human history on which 29 countries have signed, says Wang Yi, vice foreign minister when making the proposal on China's participation in the convention.

After verifying the convention the State Council holds that participation in the convention will help China to deal blows at destructive activities of national separatists and enemy forces from at home and abroad in damaging public security and order. It will also be good for China to build up a good international image and protect the national interest. Judging from the angle of domestic law, the stipulations of China's Criminal Law on bombings and organizing terrorist activities totally conform to the convention in content, therefore providing a solid ground to carry out the convention in China.
