US Jets Bomb Taliban Headquarters of Kandahar

US fighter planes on Tuesday bombed the targets around the southern Afghan city of Kandahar, the Taliban headquarters, reports reaching here from Kandahar said.

The air strikes started before dawn and lasted till in the afternoon. The reports quoted local residents as saying the US jets dropped a lot of bombs and the attacks were very severe.

There were no immediate reports about casualties or damages to property.

Meanwhile, a report quoted witnesses as saying that the US jets pounded the Taliban positions on Tuesday near Ai Khanun, a small town in northeast Afghanistan close to the border with Tajikistan. witnesses said.

Another report said that the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance on Tuesday mobilized hundreds of extra village-based and regular fighters to boost positions in frontlines about 80 kilometers north of Kabul.

The Northern Alliance troops confronting the Taliban front line forces is around 4,000 while the number of Taliban forces is around 6,000, who control the high ground surrounding the

frontlines 50 kilometers north of Kabul.
