Sino-German Relations Develop Rapidly: FM Spokesman

Relations between China and Germany have developed rapidly in recent years as a result of joint efforts from both sides, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said Tuesday.

At a regular press conference Tuesday, spokesman Sun Yuxi said the two countries' cooperation in such areas as politics, economy, trade, and science and technology, culture, education and environmental protection have been fruitful.

Sun said that the Chinese government has always attached importance to developing relations with Germany and to Germany's important role in European and world affairs.

He said that under the present global situation, further strengthening Sino-German cooperation in various areas is not only in the fundamental interest of the two peoples, but also conducive to world peace and stability.

Sun said that Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao will meet German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, and leaders of some political parties during his official visit to Germany. They will exchange views on further strengthening Sino-German relations.

He said that Schroeder will visit China at the invitation of Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji at the end of the month. This will be his third visit to China, indicating the close relationship between the two nations, Sun said.

Sun said that Schroeder will bring along German entrepreneurs on his visit. Chinese President Jiang Zemin will meet with him and Premier Zhu Rongji will hold talks with him. The two sides will exchange views on important international issues including counter-terrorism.

Schroeder is expected to attend the second meeting of Sino-German Hi-Tech Forum and speak at Beijing University, Sun said. China and Germany will sign a series of important agreements on cooperation during his visit, Sun added.
