China, the Philippines to Advance Formulation of Code of Behavioron South China Sea

China and the Philippines Tuesday agreed to make concerted efforts for advancing the formulation of the code of behavior on the South China Sea in a bid to safeguard the stability in the region.

Chinese President Jiang Zemin and the visiting Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo held lengthy official talks at the Great Hall of the People, where the two heads of state

exchanged views on issues of common concerned, including the issue of the South China Sea.

Both believed that existing differences between the two countries should not affect the overall situation of bilateral relations.

Both agreed to seek ways for resolving the problem by peaceful negotiations through the current bilateral channels.

The two leaders in the talks also agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in non-traditional security areas and striking against transnational crimes.

Arroyo was currently on a three-day state visit to China as guest of Jiang.
