Major Grain Producer Expects to Yield 20 Billion Kilograms
Despite severe drought, northeast China's Jilin Province, one of the country's biggest grain producers, is expected to yield more than 20 billion kilograms of grain this year.
The grain yield is likely to reach 21 billion kilograms, a sharp increase from last year's 16 billion kilograms, according to an estimate made by the agricultural department of the province.
Jilin has suffered severe drought this year. Statistics show that over one million hectares of crops were affected by drought and more than 450,000 hectares would reap no harvest this year.
The province was hit by drought last year, causing a drastic drop of grain output. Jilin has increased investment and manpower in drought relief, leading the recovery of grain output this year.
The three provinces of Jilin, Liaoning and Heilongjiang in northeast China make the largest commercial grain production base in China. Jilin, located on the so-called golden maize belt, is known for producing a large quantity of quality maize.
