Ethiopian PM Pledges to Strengthen Ties with Tanzania

Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi has reiterated his country's commitment to strengthening the existing cordial relationships with Tanzania, local newspapers reported on Tuesday.

Speaking to members of the diplomatic corps accredited to Tanzania at the State House here on Monday, the visiting prime minister said he had agreed with his host, Tanzanian President

Benjamin Mkapa on exploring ways through which the ties could be enhanced, singling out transport, trade and human resources development as prospective areas of cooperation.

He told the diplomatic corps that the two countries enjoyed excellent relations for many years and shared positions on African unity, peace and development.

Meles said that during his visit, he discussed with his host about issues of mutual interests and regional affairs, adding that Ethiopia would continue to promote socioeconomic integration in Africa under the African Union.

He said African countries needed to support one another to overcome development challenges, and his country would play an active role towards restoring peace and stability on the continent, specifically in the Horn of Africa.

The Ethiopian prime minister is scheduled to leave Tuesday after concluding his four-day official visit to Tanzania.
