U.N. Envoy for Afghanistan Visits Pakistan
U.N. special envoy for Afghanistan Lakhdar Brahimi began his first day visit to Pakistan on Monday, aimed at sounding out ideas on forming a broad-based government in Afghanistan to replace the Taliban.
The U.N. mission started as U.S. bombing campaign on Afghanistan entered its fourth week. Local press quoted some sources as saying that Brahimi was due to meet the U.S. and European Union ambassadors, as well as the envoy of Kazakhstan.
Brahimi was expected to travel to Iran after Pakistan, and later to visit Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.
On Sunday, Brahimi met U.N. staff trying to cope with an expected flood of Afghan refugees and a growing humanitarian crisis in the country after three weeks of U.S. air strikes.
It was Brahimi's first visit to the region since U.S.-led forces launched air raids on October 7 against the Taliban for sheltering Osama bin Laden, Washington's main suspect in last month's attacks on the United States.
