Ford Motor Conservation, Environmental Grants Released in ChinaThe award ceremony of the 2001 "Ford Motor Conservation and Environmental Grants, China" was held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing Monday. Grants totaling one million yuan went to 23 outstanding environment protection projects nationwide.The first prize projects were Natural Environment Protection Category: Green River, a program for protecting the origin of the Yangtze River and China University of Political Science and Law for offering legal assistance to victims of pollution. The environmental protection cause is strengthened by all of those who have been working hard and silently on the forefront of the environment protection for many years and have made painstaking efforts to improve China's environmental conditions, said Wang Guangying, vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of National People's Congress. In his congratulatory letter, Zou Jiahua, also a vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, defined the environmental protection as a basic policy of China. He calls on the public to show more concern about the matter which is a great cause and beneficial to the future. Ford Motor launched the one million yuan grant fund for the second year on June 7, 2001. Since it began, the program has received great attention from environment protection circles as well as tens of thousands of people committed to environmental protection causes. Winners of the award were selected from among 410 applications. Ford Motor Conservation and Environmental Grants is one of the world's largest environmental and conservation grants, which follows the "Henry Ford Conservation Grants, originating in Britain in 1983. It aims to encourage people to initiate or join schemes that help their local environment, heritage and nature resources. So far, this program has been operational in more than 50 countries and regions.
