Arafat, Peres to Meet in Spain: Palestinian Diplomat
Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat will meet with Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres in Spain in the next few days, a Cairo-based Palestinian diplomat said Monday.
Arafat and Peres will meet on the sidelines of a business forum, which will be held in the town of Formentor in northern Balearic island in Spain on Friday, said Mohamed Subeih, Palestinian permanent delegate to the Arab League.
During the meeting, the two leaders are expected to discuss the latest developments in the occupied Palestinian territories and ways of halting the ongoing Palestinian-Israeli violence, he said.
More than 800 people, mostly Palestinians, have been killed since the eruption of the deadly clashes in September last year.
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak will be among the participants, the state-run MENA news agency said.
The forum, an annual event held by the Spanish government to deepen Euro-Mediterranean cooperation, is one of the biggest annual gatherings attended by political leaders, economists as well as cultural, media, environmental and security figures from Mediterranean littoral countries.
