Chinese Premier Meets Icelandic FM
Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji met Monday with Halldor Asgrimsson, Iceland's minister of foreign affairs and foreign trade, and his party.

Zhu welcomed the Icelandic guests, who visited China at the time when the two countries are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the establishment of China-Iceland diplomatic ties.

Zhu spoke highly of the sound development of China-Iceland relations in all fields, and noted potentials could be tapped in such fields as geothermal power, fishery and shipbuilding industries, in which bilateral cooperation was already fruitful.

Zhu said that China attached importance to its ties with Iceland and hoped to make concerted efforts for raising bilateral ties to a new phase on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit.

He also briefed the guests on China's stance in combating terrorism and China's economic development prospects.

Asgrimsson said that Iceland cherished its relations with China. The island country in recent years noticed the important role played by Asia in the world economy and trade and hoped to further the cooperation with Asian countries and with China in particular.

Both China and Iceland share common interests in maintaining world peace and promoting joint development, said Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan while talking with his Icelandic counterpart Halldor Asgrimsson Monday.

On the basis of mutual respect, mutual benefit and equality, China and Iceland have cooperated well since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1971, and have made satisfactory achievements, said Tang.

The bilateral relations have bright prospects, Tang said. " China attaches great importance to the ties with Iceland, and is willing to make joint efforts together with Iceland to push forward the development of China-Iceland relations."

Asgrimsson, also minister of foreign trade of Iceland, who arrived in Beijing on October 27, said that under the current international circumstances, Iceland is paying more attention to China's status and role in world affairs, and wishes to strengthen negotiations and cooperation with China in this regard.

Both sides also exchanged views on global and regional issues of common concern.
