Closer Trade Ties Expected with Slovenia

Slovenia, one of the founding members of the World Trade Organization (WTO), will further promote the development of foreign trade and economic co-operation with China in the coming years.

Tea Petrin, minister of the economy of the Republic of Slovenia, made the remarks during her visit to China last week.

Slovenia, then part of Yugoslavia, began engaging in economic co-operation with China in 1984. Bilateral trade volume between the two countries has seen a rapid surge in the last two years.

Petrin attributed the increase to China's economic reform in line with WTO principles and the country's huge market.

Sources from her ministry revealed that, last year, exports from Slovenia to the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong exceeded US$20 million and imports reached US$150 billion.

Slovenia mainly exports electronic products, pharmaceutics and auto parts.

"Some Slovenian companies have set up representative offices in Beijing and a Sino-Slovenian medicine joint venture has been launched in Chengdu, capital of Southwest China's Sichuan Province," Petrin said.

Slovenia seeks to set up more joint ventures in China, especially in the western regions, and co-operate with Chinese research institutions and enterprises on the development and manufacturing of biological pharmaceutics.

"As my first visit to China, I see China as a country where great history intertwines with great prospects for the future," Petrin said.

She was confident that, after China's entry into the WTO, bilateral trade will further increase and the fields of co-operation will be further expanded.
