Chinese Electronics, Information Sector Leap Forward in 15 Years

China's electronics and information enterprises have had a more competitive edge over their foreign counterparts after 15 years' development, sources said Sunday in Chengdu, provincial capital of Sichuan Province, Southwest China.

Experts with the Ministry of Information Industry said that the profits of China's 100 leading electronics and information enterprises have witnessed a marked surge during the past 15 years since the first top 100 of them were selected.

Statistics show that the gross sales of the top 100 totaled 16. 9 billion yuan (US$2.04 billion) in 1987. The figure became some 444.2 billion yuan (US$53.7 billion) in 2000, an increase of 26.28 times.

Meanwhile, the product mix has been upgraded with telecommunications and computer-related items dominating industrial production.

Nearly half of the leading 100 enterprises have been listed on the stock market and many have entered the international market. Companies such as Legend, Haier and TCL have become well-known companies with a sharp competitive edge worldwide.

China's top 100 electronics and information enterprises are selected once a year, based on their total sales and profits for the previous year.
