Families Gather to Mourn Loved Ones at Ex-World Trade Center in U.S.

Thousands of family members of those killed by the terrorist attacks on September 11 gathered at the site of the World trade Center here Sunday to bid farewell to their loved ones.

With the rubble of the twin towers still smoldering 47 days after the September 11 attacks and the air still filled with a bitter odor, many memorial service participants clutched pictures of the victims.

Recovery work, which has been going on nearly round-the-clock since the attacks, halted for the service.

Two passenger planes hijacked by terrorists hit and toppled the landmark buildings, leaving more than 4,000 missing or dead. Official estimates of losses amounted to 100 billion U.S. dollars.
