Contracts Signed for Dyke Reinforcement Along YangtzeA contract-signing ceremony was held on October 25 in Wuhan between the Yangtze River Water Resources Committee (YWRC) and bidding companies for 27 dyke construction projects along the Yangtze River, the nation's longest waterway.The projects, mainly located in the middle reaches of the river, are expected to cost about 800 million yuan (96 million U.S. dollars). China started an ambitious dyke-reinforcement project along the river in 1999, which aims to improve the anti-flood capacity of the Yangtze embankments. The project will take four to five years to complete and cost 15 billion yuan (1.8 billion U.S. dollars) in central government funding. The large-scale projects received 900 bids from over 230 companies across the country, said Xiong Tie, deputy director of YWRC. |
