Measures Adapt Tianjin to WTO EntryTo be fully prepared for China' s impending entry to the World Trade Organization (WTO), Tianjin, a port city in north China, will continue its economic and technological reform.Li Shenglin, mayor of Tianjin, said at the opening ceremony of the International Consultant Forum for the Mayor of Tianjin here Saturday that the city will restructure its economic system, governmental administrative methods and operational system of local enterprises which are not in line with requirements of WTO. Tianjin will promote international cooperation, accelerate its opening process, enhance technological levels and strengthen its service functions, Li emphasized. Tianjin has taken some measures so far for the purposes, and will focus more on building a sound investment environment by enforcing macro-economic regulation and control, and implementing government supervision based on the rules of market economy, Li said. The city's priorities in the coming years are to introduce capital and advanced technologies, push forward the opening of finance, insurance, commerce, telecom to overseas investors, develop high-tech industries and urban infrastructure construction, according to the mayor. The two-day forum, with the theme "WTO entry and development of Tianjin," has attracted participants from over 30 multinationals like Motorola, Siemens, Samsung as well as distinguished foreign guests and domestic experts. Li said Tianjin hopes the participants will help the municipality to find the best ways to meet the challenges and opportunities arising from China's WTO entry and build itself into an international port city. |
