Taliban Confirms American National Detained in Afghanistan

Spokesman for the Afghan Taliban militia Amir Khan Muttaqi has confirmed that an American national is under the custody of the Taliban, who had been brought to Kabul for trial, a report reaching here said on Sunday.

The spokesman said that this American national would be tried and what would be his fate is not yet clear.

"Investigations are continuing and I cannot give information about him because the issue is not yet clear," said Muttaqi.

According to the Afghan Islamic Press (AIP), a foreigner, looking like American or European, was arrested Friday night in Spin Boldak of southern Kandahar province near Pak-Afghan border.

Early reports suggested the arrested American was gathering information inside Afghanistan for the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), but no independent confirmation is available so far.
