China's Per Capita Vegetable Consumption Above World Average

China's annual vegetable yield has continued to increase over the past 20 years, raising the per capita consumption of vegetables to 311 kg, well above the world average of 105 kg, according to sources.

The increase is attributed to the country's technological progress in vegetable cultivation and processing, said Fang Zhiyuan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, who attended an international forum on vegetables in Yantai.

China now has 50 state or provincial level vegetable research organizations, with 1,600 of technical personnel. And 32 agricultural universities across the country offer vegetable cultivation programs.

According to the agronomist, China has made substantial progress in vegetable cultivation techniques, involving species resources collecting and research, seed cultivation through

genetic engineering, and diseases and pests prevention.
